General Questions:

  • Sunflower Virtual Academy is a tuition-free online public school serving Kansas high school students in grades 9-12. We offer a flexible learning environment where students complete coursework online while receiving support from licensed teachers and staff. Our program is designed to help students succeed in a way that fits their individual goals and schedules. 

     

  • Yes. Sunflower Virtual Academy is an accredited public school by the Kansas State Department of Education within USD 402. SVA Students earn credits toward graduation and receive a recognized high school diploma upon successful completion of graduation requirements.

     

  • Sunflower Virtual Academy serves eligible Kansas high school students in grades 9-12.


  • Yes. Sunflower Virtual Academy is a tuition-free public school option for eligible Kansas students. There is no cost for enrollment, and students receive access to their online coursework and teacher support as part of the program. A small technology fee between $15 and $50 may apply depending on a student’s free or reduced lunch status.

  • Students are encouraged to set their own schedule and work a minimum of 4-5 hours per day for 5 days a week to remain on track. Students complete coursework online through our learning platform Edmentum, with lessons organized into clear units and assignments. Students work at their own pace while teachers monitor progress, provide feedback, and offer support along the way. To learn more about our curriculum, click here.

  • Many different students thrive at Sunflower Virtual Academy. Students who often do well include those who value flexibility, are self-motivated, looking to balance jobs or family responsibilities, pursue athletics or other interests, or simply need a learning environment that better fits their needs. The students that do best here are strong communicators who aren’t afraid to ask for help when they need it.  

  • SVA students follow an approved curriculum, earn accredited high school credits, and receive support from licensed teachers. Families gain the flexibility of learning from home while still having the structure and resources of a school program.

  • SVA students may participate in extracurricular activities in their resident district provided they:

    ● Meet Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) academic eligibility

    requirements.

    ● Maintain enrollment in a minimum of five courses per semester.

  • At this time, Sunflower Virtual Academy does not offer credit recovery programs or adult education courses. We currently serve traditional high school students only.

Enrollment Questions:

  • You can apply online through our website by completing the pre-enrollment application. Once submitted, our staff will review your information and contact you for an interview. Click here to learn more about our enrollment process.

  • After submitting a pre-enrollment application, you will be contacted for an interview with our staff. Our staff then reviews eligibility, and families complete any required forms and provide necessary records or documents. We work to make the process as smooth and simple as possible to get your student started. To learn more, click here. 

     

  • Enrollment timelines may vary throughout the year. We encourage families to apply as early as possible for the upcoming semester or school year, see our enrollment page for more information.

  • To enroll at SVA, families must:

    • Complete and submit the online enrollment application along with the following documents:
    • Proof of residency - must be one of the following:
      • Current KS driver's license
      • Current vehicle registration
      • Current voter registration card
    • Utility bill dated on or after July 1 in the year you are enrolling
    • Rent/lease agreement dated on or after July 1 in the year you are enrolling
    • Bank statement dated on or after July 1 in the year you are enrolling 
    • Immunization record
    • Birth certificate
    • Academic transcripts from the most recently attended school

  • No, Sunflower Virtual Academy does not allow mid-year transfers at this time. We encourage interested families to apply for the upcoming semester or school year, and our team is happy to answer questions about future enrollment opportunities. 


  • Yes. Families may choose to return to a traditional school setting in the future. Our team is willing to guide your students to wherever they need to go in order to succeed, and you can sit with us at any time to discuss your options of returning to brick and mortar

  • Yes. Students who are ready to move faster may progress through coursework at an accelerated pace while still meeting course requirements and receiving teacher support.

  • Yes. Our flexible online format allows students to complete coursework around work schedules, athletics, family responsibilities, and other commitments while continuing to make academic progress. 

     

Graduation and Credits Questions:

  • Students at Sunflower Virtual Academy must earn 24 credits and meet all applicable graduation requirements to receive a diploma. Graduation requirements can vary between schools and districts, so transfer students should speak with staff to review previously earned credits and create a plan toward graduation. 

     

  • Yes. Credits earned at another accredited school will be reviewed during the enrollment process. Our staff will evaluate transcripts and determine how credits apply toward graduation requirements.

     

  • Many transfer students are able to stay on track for graduation depending on the credits they have already earned. Our staff will review transcripts and help create an individualized plan and timeline.

     

  • Yes. Graduates of Sunflower Virtual Academy receive a state-recognized high school diploma.

     

  • Yes. Sunflower Virtual Academy holds a graduation ceremony each May at the end of the school year.

     

  • Families may contact the school office or their student’s teacher at any time to review graduation progress and requirements. 

     

  • Students who are behind on credits may still have pathways toward graduation. Our staff can review academic history and help families understand available options.

     

  • Currently we do not offer students the opportunity to graduate early, however when a student finishes their courses for the semester they are done with classes for that time period. 

     

  • Questions about transcripts, credit transfers, or graduation requirements may be directed to the school office or your student’s teacher. 

     

  • No. Sunflower Virtual Academy students graduate separately and participate in their own graduation ceremony. 

     

Student and Family Support Questions:

 

  • ParentSquare is a communication platform designed to help parents and guardians send and receive school communications. Use ParentSquare to stay informed about school updates.

  • Parents can access ParentSquare by downloading the app and activating their account. You can find more information about getting started here!

  • Parents have the ability to log into Edmentum Sensei at any time. You will be sent a link to activate your account upon the start of the current semester. Edmentum Sensei’s parent portal lets you see your student’s current assignments and due dates, track their progress and monitor their overall performance. 

     

  • If you are concerned about your student’s progress feel free to contact the center at 316.775.4160 at any time during our business hours. We will be happy to connect you with your student’s teacher to review their progress and create a plan for student success.

  • Academic support is available through our teachers and staff, and families can also connect with our school counselor or support personnel when additional help is needed.   • Attendance is based on participation and academic engagement rather than simply being seated in a classroom. Students are expected to log in regularly, make progress in coursework, and stay actively engaged in their classes. Specific attendance requirements will be shared with enrolled families. 

     

  • No. While students complete coursework in a flexible online environment, they are supported by teachers and staff who monitor progress, provide feedback, answer questions, and help keep students on track with weekly check-ins. Students have independence, but they are never on their own. 

     

  • Sunflower Virtual Academy can be a strong fit for some students who struggled in a traditional school setting, particularly those who benefit from flexible scheduling, self-paced learning, and a more independent environment. Every student’s needs are different, so families are encouraged to consider whether a flexible virtual program is the right match for their student.

Tech Help:

  • Students need access to a computer/laptop or Chromebook and a stable internet connection in order to complete coursework online. 

     

  • Yes. All coursework, communication, and progress tracking all take place online, students need consistent and reliable internet access to be successful in the program.

  • Students who do not have a device available for school use may be issued a Chromebook through Sunflower Virtual Academy.

  • Students log into edmentum through Clever, and will receive instructions on activating their account before the beginning of the semester.

  • If your student is experiencing technical issues, families can contact the Sunflower Virtual Academy center directly at 316.775.4160 or reach out directly to the student’s teacher for assistance. Our staff will help troubleshoot issues or guide you to the right support. 

     

  • Yes. Students can access coursework and complete assignments anytime, anywhere they have internet access.
